Social Work Corner

Holiday Stress & Children
From Mrs. May Gruia
CHA Social Worker (K-8)

Mrs. Gruia has a heart for the social and emotional development of children of all ages, and we are excited that she will be sharing helpful insights for parents from time to time in Parents' Page. We hope you find this first post helpful!

Studies have shown that children, just like adults, feel not just the excitement, but also the stress of the holiday season (read more here). This actually presents a good opportunity for parents to lead by example and teach their children healthy ways of dealing with stress. These skills will help children develop healthy stress management tools in childhood and throughout their lives.

One technique I often tell parents about is talking to themselves. While it may sound strange, it is actually a very effective way to teach children how to cope in various situations. When feeling stressed, try to process through that stress out loud so that your child will pick up good stress management techniques. For example, “The cookies are burnt but at least half of them are still good. I’ll just make another batch and maybe even try to add white chocolate chips this time.”

Although this article is about impulse control, technique 8 covers this idea and explains how processing through situations out loud helps your children develop clear and rational reactions to situations. And while you’re at it, you may even pick up more strategies to help yourself through some holiday stress.
