Honors Biochemistry Students Recognized in National Small World Initiative Contest
Last November, students in Honors Biochemistry participated in a challenge from the Small World Initiative in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Students were asked to "Do Something" to raise awareness about antibiotic usage and the worldwide antibiotic resistance crisis. Two of the entries from Walker's really stood out and received honorable mentions from The Small World Initiative.

Walker's Ski Team Wins New England Championship
For the second year in a row, Walker's varsity ski team took home the first place trophy in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class C Championship race held Wednesday, February 14 at Wachusett Mountain in Massachusetts. Read more for individual results:

Sixth Grade Explores STEAM
Walker's sixth graders have been diligently working with faculty members Corina Alvarezdelugo and Julie Greshin on their STEAM projects for the Inspiration 2 Innovation Challenge, presented by the Talcott Mountain Science Center. Part art show/part science project, the contest is a fun way for students in grades K-8 to explore nature and investigate STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) while inspiring creative thinking (tmsc.org). The finished works will be displayed at the New Britain Museum of American Art. For more information, visit www.tmsc.org/i2i.

Students Celebrate the Lunar New Year
On Wednesday, February 14, the Walker's community was treated to a spectacular Lunar New Year assembly in Ferguson Theater. Students from across Asia shared information about the important holiday, their favorite Lunar New Year traditions, songs and original dances. The assembly concluded with a surprise video message from family members in Asia and the US wishing students a happy and healthy new year.

Walker's to Participate in Harvard
Global Essay Contest

Walker's is the first American school to be invited to participate in the Harvard Alumni for Global Women's Empowerment annual essay contest, which was established to invite students to think critically about the status and rights of women. This year's question: What is the biggest challenge facing women and girls in your country today? All of Walker's juniors and seniors will be participating in the contest. The winner will be awarded the Harvard GlobalWE Book Award and will have the opportunity to have their essay published online. Submissions are due March 9; winners will be announced in May 2018.

Avon Old Farms School

Six Walker's students have artwork on display at Avon Old Farms School for their "Spaces & Places" middle and high school art exhibit. Hooray Sunray to Meadow Campurciani '24, Chloe Fares '24, Alexia Grech '23, Tianyi Huang '21, Ella Samson '20, and Amy Xia '21. A public reception was held on Thursday, February 15.

Back to Natural Documentary Screening
Brings Producer to Campus

On Sunday, February 11, students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to watch the documentary Back to Natural and meet its director/producer, Dr. Gillian Scott-Ward. After the screening of the documentary, students and faculty participated in a Q&A with Dr. Scott-Ward which resulted in a small group discussion on race and identity in America, Europe and the Caribbean. Hear students' reactions to the documentary here. The event was presented by Walker's Film Society and Black Student Union (BSU) clubs.

Juniors Learn from Local Politicians
On Friday, Connecticut State Representative Derek Slap (D-West Hartford, Avon, Farmington) and Senator Beth Rye (D-Bloomfield, Burlington, Farmington, West Hartford) visited campus to talk with the junior class about their backgrounds and the current political climate, encouraging students to get involved in politics however they can. Students asked important and difficult questions related to topics including women's rights, partisanship, education equity, gun control, and wealth disparity.

Grandparent's and Friend's Day 2018
Invitations for Grandparent's and Friend's Day 2018 will be mailed soon! We need your help in gathering some information to ensure invitations are received. Your daughter's grandparents or other special adults in her life are invited to spend the day on campus on Friday, April 13 attending morning meeting, classes and other special activities. Please log in to Veracross and update your family information by going to 'Update Household Profile'.

Class of 2019: We are looking forward to seeing parents and students at tomorrow's Junior College program. As a reminder, registration for parents is from 8:15-8:45 a.m. in Beaver Brook. Your daughters will join us at 10:00 a.m. for the college panel and closing session. The program ends at 12:30 p.m. More detailed information can be found on the College Counseling website.
