Caroline Smith '19 and Theresa Jo '18 share a model bridge they completed during Engineering class on Tuesday. The class was working on building and analyzing trusses as part of a unit on structures and bridges.

Junior Selected to Attend Competitive Young Writers' Conference
Walker's junior Ruoyi Jin '19 has been selected to attend the elite New England Young Writers’ Conference (NEYWC) at Middlebury College's Bread Loaf campus, which will be held May 17-20, 2018. A talented creative writer, Ruoyi will have the opportunity to write and share her work, learn to edit and revise and be coached by professional writers.

Freshman to Represent Walker's at the Connecticut Poetry Out Loud State Finals
Best of luck to Kristen St. Louis '21, who will represent Walker's at the Connecticut Poetry Out Loud State Finals on Saturday, March 3. Kristen was selected for the competition by Walker's faculty following an oratory between four Walker's students in December. Each finalist recited a poem of their choosing in front of the Walker's community and were evaluated based on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding and overall performance. The winner of the state finals will have the opportunity to represent the state of Connecticut in Washington, DC in April for the National Poetry Out Loud Competition.

Walker's Equestrians Advance to IEA Zone Finals
On Saturday, February 24, Walker's equestrian team traveled to Oak Meadow Farm in East Windsor to compete against 13 other teams in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Zone 1 Region 8 Semi-Finals. All team members rode very well against intense competition, earning the high school team 39 points and the title of Regional Champion.

Ski Team Update
Hooray Sunray to Anneliese Sonju ’21, a member of Walker's ski team, who has qualified for the Eastern Regionals. She will head up to Stowe, Vermont next week to compete in Alpine Skiing against some of the best skiers in the northeast.

Following their New England Championship win, Walker's ski team placed fourth overall in the Brigham Ski League (BSL) Carl Williams Slalom Championships, held February 21 at Ski Sundown. They were the first place finisher for girls. Anneliese Sonju '21 placed first, Elise Namnoum '19 placed second and Sarah Dale '22 placed 11th.

Students Awarded First Place in
STEAM Competition

Middle School students Lilia Gooch '24, Chloe Fares '24, and Grace Sappington '24 earned First Prize for their project, Coral Reef Then and Now, in the Group Category for the i2i: STE(A)M Challenge, a project of the New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA) in collaboration with the Talcott Mountain Science Center and Academy. The challenge was developed to give students the opportunity to further their understanding of how STEM subjects and art relate and the importance of symbiosis.

Students Share Latin American Culture with Walker's Community
On Wednesday, student members of the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) presented during Chapel, sharing personal reflections about their identity and culture. Students shared dances, spoken word pieces, presentations and videos with the Walker's community.

Transportation to and from Bradley Airport and Union Station in Hartford on the days before and at the end of break is provided for those who sign up in advance. Please remember that early departures for vacations are strongly discouraged and should be avoided except in the most urgent of situations.

Robotics Team to Compete in
Qualifying Event
