Commencement Notes
Sunday is going to be a beautiful day to celebrate our 2018 graduates! See below for some information related to the day:
  • The commencement ceremony takes place on the front lawn of our campus. Everyone is encouraged to wear sunscreen, dress in lightweight clothing and have sunglasses and/or hats on hand. 
  • Water stations are set up throughout the area and small tents are available for the elderly, young children and others needing refuge from the sun. 
  • Share your photos on social media using the hashtags #walkersgrad and #ewsclassof2018. There will also be a Snapchat geofilter available Saturday afternoon through Sunday's events for you to use.
  • Photos and a full-length, HD video will be shared in the days following Commencement.

The 2018 summer reading lists and assignments have been posted in the checklists in our Back to School webpage. Please refer to these checklists as you plan for the 2018-2019 school year. Questions? Junior Works Toward Girl Scout Gold Award
Elisabeth “Liz” Helmin ’19 worked with our sixth grade students for nine weeks in her “My Words, My Choice” program to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. Liz, who has been a Scout since she was five years old, developed her curriculum with the support of several Walker’s faculty members includes activities on choosing your words carefully, how your words impact others and accepting differences. The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting and only 3% of Girl Scouts achieve the distinction. She received it in June 2018.

Walker's Participates in UConn Health Course
Elisa Cardona, Walker's director of equity and social justice, and Christina Fares ’22 participated in the UCONN Health course entitled “Gender and Sex: Biology, Sociology and the Intersection with Healthcare Practice” directed by Drs. Effie Ioannidou and Eric Bernstein. The course was designed for first-year medical and dental students and aimed to explore the difference between gender and sex and the ways in which both may impact patients in social-emotional and biological ways. Gender-based privilege and bias within research and healthcare was discussed. Ms. Cardona discussed gender identity and gender expression as well as gender-sensitive ways in the social interaction with patients. Christina Fares ’22 spoke on gender pronouns and deadnaming and the way they affects teenager emotions.

Incoming Student Shares Walker's With Future Students in China
Incoming freshwoman Sarah You '22 represented Walker's as an ambassador during a workshop for future students in Shanghai and Beijing, sharing information about Walker's and tips for learning English. Welcome to Walker's, Sarah!

From the College Counseling Office
Class of 2018: Congratulations to all the seniors. We wish you well in college next year and look forward to hearing from you - don't forget to write! And mark your calendars for the young alumnae pizza party and dessert reception on January 8, 2019. We will submit final transcripts to your colleges next week and do not need a formal request or paperwork from you in order to do so.

Dear parents: May was a busy month for the EWSPA as we hosted two of our favorite events, Staff Appreciation Luncheon and Dogswood Day. The Staff Appreciation Luncheon was superhero themed this year and the All School Committee did a beautiful job in transforming the Common Room into Walker’s version of Gotham City.

Summer Conditioning Clinic
Walker's Athletic Director John Monagan and Assistant Athletic Director Mimi Duran are running a preseason conditioning clinic for summer 2018, focusing on agility, endurance, and core skills. The camp runs August 28-30 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All ability levels are welcome; camp is open to girls in grades seven through 12.   • Saturday, June 9: Music Recital - Required for Upper School (Chapel), 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Vespers Dress Required; Special Event Dress for Seniors
  • Satuday, June 9: Baccalaureate - Required for Upper School (Chapel), 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Vespers Dress Required; Special Event Dress for Seniors
  • Saturday, June 9: 9th-11th Grade Dinners (Lower Level of Beaver Brook), 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 9: Senior Commencement Dinner (Living Room), 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 9: Prize Night - Required for Upper School, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Followed by a reception (by invitation for seniors and families) and ice cream social
  • Sunday, June 10: Commencement
