MLK Day Program and Other Special Schedules
This coming Monday, January 21 is a special schedule for our annual MLK Day programming:
  • 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Upper School Presentation (Ferguson Theatre) and Middle School Presentation (Little Ferg)
  • 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. Workshops
  • 12:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Lunch
  • 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Racial Justice Panel and Musical Closing (Ferguson Theatre)

Students Participate in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
  • Ella Samson '20 and Royi Jin '19 have been selected to exhibit their artwork at the 2019 CT Regional Scholastic Art Awards Show, held at the Hartford Art School's Silpe Gallery. The exhibition runs January 13 through February 1, with an awards ceremony on January 27.
  • Grace Mugo '22, Amelia Holl '21, Kristen St. Louis '21 and Lizzy Strapp '21 were recommended by the English Department to submit work to the 2019 Scholastic Writing Awards for the Northeast Region-at-Large affiliate and will hear results on February 1. 
Student winners will be considered for the Scholastic National Competition. Best of luck to our student artists and writers!

Music Faculty Share Their Talents
During music assembly on Wednesday, the Walker's community was treated to music performances by our talented music teachers: Marguerita Smith (piano) and Dongbin Shin (violin). Shin played solo pieces as well as duets with Smith, which included some crowd favorites from popular Disney films.

There is Still Time to Register for Swim Clinic with Olympian Amanda Weir
Walker's will host a Fitter and Faster Swim Tour clinic on Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27 with Amanda Weir, three-time Olympian and four-time Olympic medalist, World Champion, and former World Record holder. Weir will work with participants on the technique required to drop time and race faster. There will be two sessions available to swimmers ages 12 and over, and one for swimmers ages 11 and under. Register before sessions fill up - don't miss out on this opportunity to learn from a three-time Olympian!

This event is funded in part by The Mary Johnstone Fenley Kaye '20, Mary Fenley Kaye Kelley '44 and Pemella Kaye Kelley '69 Endowed Wellness Fund and the Susanna Jones Leadership Fund.

Class of 2020: Saturday is the College Program for junior students (required event) and parents, and we are really looking forward to seeing you at this important college kickoff. Even if you haven't responded, you are welcome to attend. More information about the program can be found below. There are many teams playing at home in the afternoon, so come to campus and make a day of it!

Upcoming Arts Receptions
Enjoy paintings by Zulinette Morales until February 18 in the Constance Lavino Bell Library Gallery. On Thursday, January 24, an artist reception for Morales will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Constance Lavino Bell Library. Adult community members are welcome to attend. Walker's Theater Program Presents Winter Play Featuring UConn Puppets
On Thursday, February 28, 2019 and Friday, March 1, 2019, Walker's Theater Program will present She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurer's Edition featuring professional puppets from UConn's Puppet Arts Program. The performances will be open to the public and cost $10 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.ethelwalker.org/winterplay and will also be available at the door. (Please note that faculty, staff and students of Walker's do not need to purchase tickets to the performance.)

Interested in Technology

Is your daughter interested in learning more about virtual reality? Girls in grades 8-12, join Girls for Technology starting January 19 for five weeks of education and training using VR/AR at University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford. Volunteers are also needed.
