Investiture Ceremony Keynote Speaker Announced
We are pleased to announce that Shabana Basij-Rasikh will be the keynote speaker at Dr. Meera Viswanathan's Investiture Ceremony on Friday, October 14 at 4:00 pm. Shabana is the president and co-founder of The School of Leadership Afghanistan, an Afghan-led private boarding school for Afghan girls. The school is the first of its kind in Afghanistan.

The Investiture is a required event for all students.

Family Weekend & Ribbon Cutting

Theresa Jo '18 and Riley Sheldon '20 Named Athletes of the Week
  • Theresa Jo '18, Varsity Volleyball (Glen Rock, NJ): "Solid, Unflappable, Team Player" Theresa will do anything the team needs and shows complete focus at all times in the gym. Her positive attitude provides a solid foundation for the team to grow on.
  • Riley Sheldon '20, JV Volleyball (Simsbury, CT): "Tireless, Funny, Consistent" Riley stepped up to replace an injured middle hitter and has not stopped growing or learning. Riley raises her teammates up and always pushes to be a better player and teammate.

Sajia Darwish '14 Opens Library in Afghanistan, Shares Her Story
Walker's alumna Sajia Darwish '14 opened the Baale Parwaz Library (BPL) at Mohammed Asif Mayel High School this summer in her hometown of Kabul, Afghanistan, in the hopes of providing a refuge for learning and collaboration in a region marked by turmoil and high illiteracy. Sajia recently spoke with The Global Search for Education about her inspiring story, which was featured on Huffington Post.

Walker's Sarah Edson to Co-Host NCGS Podcast
Walker's Dean of Academic Technology and Innovation and National Coalition of Girls' Schools (NCGS) board member Sarah Edson will be co-hosting a newly created podcast by NCGS, PEP Talks: Podcast on Educational Possibilities. Hosted by Sarah and the Head of Atlanta Girls' School Yanni Hill-Gill, the podcast will spotlight innovative initiatives at girls' schools "in the areas of health and wellness, maker spaces and innovation labs, admissions and communications, scheduling and assessment, community involvement, advancement and alumnae relations, and global programs" (NCGS). The first episode of PEP Talks will be available starting October 20 and can be accessed through iTunes, the NCGS website, and The Coalition Connection newsletter.

From the College Counseling Office
October 19 is PSAT day at Walker's. As a reminder:
9th grade students will participate in a wellness program beginning at 9:00. 10th and 11th grade students will take the PSAT beginning at 8:00 a.m. They will be given their room assignments the day before and should bring several sharpened pencils (not mechanical pencils) and a calculator to their testing room. 12th grade students have the morning to work on college applications. It is a regular day for middle school students, and afternoon activities will go on as scheduled for all students.

Join Us October 18 for Our Book Club
Please join the EWSPA for our Book Club on Tuesday, October 18 in the Living Room at 6:30 p.m. Head of School Meera Viswanathan will lead discussion of Ann Hood's novel, The Book that Matters Most. Light refreshments will be served. Our book club is very casual; please come by even if you have not finished the book. We look forward to seeing you!

Play Day

Walker's field hockey team set up a teacup raffle during lunch on Thursday, October 13 to support this year's Play 4 the CURE fundraising efforts. Please stop by the fields on Saturday, take a look at all the wonderful donations we have received this year, and feel free to participate in the raffle from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to help us raise funds for the Cure! See below for just a few of the many great donations we have acquired, thanks to Walker's families and local businesses:
