The first week of Lacuna (Learning Immersion) kicked off on Tuesday, with Middle and Upper School students delving into a variety of classes outside the typical curriculum before the start of the second semester. Courses included Human Rights: Theory & Practice, Women & Sports, Storytelling for Social Justice, Mythology at the Museum, Video Production: Comedy Skits, A Women's Place is in the House & Senate, and more.

Walker's Senior Receives Comcast Scholarship
Brea Austin '17 was selected as a 2016-2017 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program recipient. The $1,000 scholarship is funded through the Comcast Foundation and recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for their commitment to community service, academics, and leadership. Hooray Sunray, Brea!

Changes to Food and Dining on Campus
We are excited to introduce the following changes in Abra's starting this week. Happy eating!
  1. Saturday and Sunday meals: A warm, continental breakfast will be served starting at 9 a.m.
  2. Hand fruit (apples, pears, bananas, etc.) will be available in Abra's from 9:15 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
  3. Dessert will be out at the start of dinner. Students, please make wise choices about your meals!
  4. Rice will be available at dinner. 
  5. We will have a tasting during lunch once a week. 
  6. Once confirmed, healthy vending machines will be introduced on campus

Walker's to Introduce New Service Opportunity
Walker's students will now have the opportunity to apply as a volunteer tax preparer through United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which helps low to moderate wage earning individuals and families file their taxes at no cost to them. Watch your email for more information from Ms. Vis about this valuable new service learning opportunity at Walker's.

Reminder: Middle School Gathering This Sunday, January 8
As a reminder, Walker's is inviting interested families for a Middle School gathering on Sunday, January 8, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. at Debby's House (the Head's House). Guests will enjoy cocoa and conversation. Please share if you know any families who may be interested. From the College Counseling Office
Class of 2018: Invitations will go out next week for the Junior Parent College Program being held on Saturday, February 18 from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This program will offer insight into the current state of college admissions and will feature an interactive admission application review led by Ann Fleming Brown, Director of Admissions at Union College. We hope you can join us on campus for this event.

Join Us for A Night of Comedy & Community
Enjoy A Night of Comedy & Community at Walker's (18+) on Saturday, February 11 to benefit Horizons at The Ethel Walker School. The 2nd annual event will feature the comedy of experienced stand-up comedians Liz Miele and Lauren Hope Krass. There will also be a live auction with great items up for bid! Tickets cost $50 a person and are now available for purchase at www.ethelwalker.org/horizons
