The Class of 2017 lead the Walker's community in the School song during Wednesday's Senior Goodbye Chapel, in which seniors presented heartfelt speeches and even a Walker's-themed duet set to Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" to give thanks and reflect on their time at Walker's.

105th Commencement Speaker:
Leander A. Dolphin '95

Leander A. Dolphin, a 1995 graduate of The Ethel Walker School and a member of the School's board of trustees, will deliver the commencement address at Walker's 105th commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 11, 2017. Leander is a partner at Shipman & Goodwin LLP in the firm's school law practice group where she represents public school districts, independent school, and colleges and universities in education and employment matters. Leander graduated from Howard University School of Law, J.D., and Wesleyan University (high honors), B.A. in English, African American Studies, and Women’s Studies. She lives in Hartford, with her husband, Raymond, and daughter, Maya.

Honors Biochemistry Students Attend Microbiology Conference in New Orleans
Dr. Suzanne Piela, Dr. Julia Sheldon and six Honors Biochemistry students are currently in New Orleans for the American Society of Microbiology conference, ASM Microbe 2017. The event is the largest gathering of microbiologists in the world and the only meeting in the field that explores the full scope of microbiology (asm.org).

Middle School Math Olympiads

The Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS), and their coach, Julie Greshin, congratulate the following students for their participation in this year's contests: (8th grade) Erin Corbett and Ally Nastri, (7th grade) Karrah Hayes, Kaitlyn Suller, Kate Manderlink, and Bejay Mugo, (6th grade) Darby Sheldon, Caitlin Dale, and Kate Samson.

Member schools are located in all 50 states, 13 American territories and 23 foreign countries. Over 120,000 students participated on over 5,000 teams this year, and our team's top scorer this year, Karrah Hayes '22, scored in the top 40% (better than 72,000 of those students) world-wide.

Alumna Awarded Fulbright Scholarship to Research Zika Epidemic
Jacinta Lomba '13, a 2017 graduate of Brown University, is among twenty seniors from Brown who have been awarded a Fulbright student scholarship to conduct research or teach abroad. The Fulbright Program, an international exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. government, is designed to build relationships between American scholars and the international community in more than 140 countries to collectively address global challenges and work toward world peace. Jacinta will conduct her research project, entitled "Interpersonal and Institutional Frameworks for Understanding the Zika Epidemic," at the Instituto de Saúde Coletiva, Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) Salvador in Bahia, Brazil.

Workshops for International Students: On Wednesday, May 28 from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Karen Kristof, senior associate director of admission at Smith College, conducted a workshop for junior international students which included some pointers regarding their college search and application process, and information about the additional forms and information they need to provide when applying. Karen is a seasoned professional who has worked with international applicants to Smith for years.

Summer Conditioning Clinic
Walker's Athletic Director John Monagan and Assistant Athletic Director Mimi Duran are running a preseason conditioning clinic for summer 2017, focusing on agility, endurance, and core skills. The camp runs August 28-31. All ability levels are welcome; camp is open to girls in grades seven through 12.
