Students Learn from Leading Scientists at
The Jackson Laboratory

On Tuesday, October 3, 17 Honors Biochemistry and Advanced Biology students went with Dr. Sheldon and Dr. Piela to an open house at The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM) in Farmington. Students heard lectures from leading scientists about the microbiome of competitive athletes, 3D genomics, single cell genomics, computational biology and cancer research. The group also learned about the internship and scholarship opportunities that JAX has available for high school students. Walker's Dancer Receives Scholarship
Hooray Sunray to Walker's dancer Garet Wierdsma '18, who was awarded a Harlequin Dance Floors Scholarship through The World Dances as well as a Judges Award for her dance solo Widows Walk. The dance tells the story about a young widow pacing and waiting for the return of her sailor… who, she despairingly realizes, will not ever come home. Athletes of the Week
Liyanni Vazquez '20, Mariela D'Alessandro '19 and Kaitlyn Suller '22 were named athletes of the week for outstanding sportsmanship. Their coaches shared the following comments:

From the College Counseling Office
A few reminders for students taking the SAT at Walker's on Saturday:

  • Breakfast is available in Abra's beginning at 7:00 a.m.
  • Students should report to the BB lobby at 7:30 a.m. sharp for their room assignments
  • Students should bring with them the following items: registration ticket, a photo ID (Walker's ID is fine), several sharpened #2 pencils (no mechanical pencils), an approved calculator (the list of approved calculators is on the College Board website), and snacks/drinks (if desired)
Approximate end times are:
  • 11:40 a.m. (SAT without essay)
  • 1:00 p.m. for students testing with accommodations
  • 12:10 p.m. (SAT with essay)
  • 9:00 a.m. (1 Subject Test), 10:10 a.m. (2 Subject Tests), 11:20 a.m. (3 Subject Tests)
