An Important Announcement from the Board Chair

Dear Green Acres Community,

Following up on last month’s announcement about Neal Brown’s decision to depart after the 2019-20 school year, I want to inform you about the progress we have made in identifying our next Head of School.

The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees has formed a Search Committee and engaged the services of a highly regarded and accomplished search consultant, who has posted the position nationally and begun discussing the role with potential candidates.

The Search Committee, led by trustees Sue Choi and Alyssa Denzer, brings together individuals with a diverse set of experiences, backgrounds, and points of view to manage the search process, meet candidates, and ultimately make a recommendation to the full Board of Trustees.

The committee consists of:

  • Sue Choi (co-chair) – Parent (current and alumni), Board Vice President
  • Alyssa Denzer (co-chair) – Parent, incoming Trustee 
  • Bart Aronson – Parent, incoming Trustee
  • Nina Chibber – Early Childhood Unit Director, Admissions Director Pre-K-1st Grade, Alumni Parent
  • Kara Combs – Middle School Teacher, Parent, former Trustee
  • Denise Gershowitz – Trustee, retired Head of Concord Hill School
  • Karen Litsinger – Parent
  • Irene Murshed – Lower School Teacher, Parent, former Trustee
  • Josh Orenstein – Parent (current and alumni), Alum, Board President
  • Kimberly Stephens – Parent 
  • Debbie Walsh – Pre-K Director, ECU Teacher, Trustee

Doreen Oleson of Resource Group 175 (RG 175), a leading independent school search firm, will be our partner in the search process. Doreen is a former independent school head with extensive experience in conducting searches for heads of independent schools. Recently, she completed the head of school search at Lowell School (DC).

Doreen has served as a trustee of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and was recipient of that organization’s 2015 Diversity Leadership Award. We have been impressed by the feedback we have received from schools that have worked with Doreen and are confident that you will find her to be a good fit for our school community.

As promised, the process that we employ will be inclusive, thorough, and professional. Doreen will be visiting the school, September 11-14, and will spend time interviewing staff, parents, and students, along with meeting with the Search Committee and Board of Trustees.

We are in the midst of building a Parent Advisory Group and a Staff Advisory Group, and will also create an online survey for staff, parents, and alumni to share their perspectives on Green Acres and the priorities for the school going forward. The objective in gathering this information will be to better understand our community and our shared values and goals to help identify candidates best suited for Green Acres.

As final candidates emerge late next fall/early next winter, we will hold open sessions for interested members of the school community to meet them and share their impressions with the Search Committee. The Search Committee will incorporate all of these opinions as it comes to a recommendation to the Board of Trustees. The Board will have the sole responsibility to make the final decision on whom to appoint as the next Head of School.

We expect to announce the outcome of this process in January 2020. Our new head will assume responsibilities on July 1, 2020.
