HANDKERCHIEF DROPS TO CLOSE 177TH YEAR
The sights and sounds of Pomp and Circumstance filled the Grove Sunday morning, May 19, 2019, as 61 seniors graduated from Saint Mary's School. Head of School Brendan O'Shea presided over the commencement exercises. Political commentator and best-selling author Cokie Roberts was the commencement speaker. Chief Marshal J’Lah Johnson ’20 dropped the handkerchief to close the ceremonies and declare the 177th session to be closed. It was a glorious blue-ribbon Saint Mary's commencement day in the Grove, as the graduates turned their tassels and Saint Mary's rings. Complete story here and photo gallery here.

NEW CROSS ADORNS SAINT MARY'S CHAPEL
Lift high the Cross! Workers put the finishing touches in May on the installation of a new wooden cross on top of historic Saint Mary’s Chapel to replace the previous old rugged cross lost to high winds in a severe storm in mid-April. The new cross was lovingly made by a carpenter named Dean who crafted this simply beautiful version of the symbol of our love for and faith in a carpenter named Jesus. We’re not sure how long the previous cross adorned our Chapel, which was built in 1856, but we trust this one will stand tall for generations to come.

ALUMNAE PROFILE SERIES
Saint Mary’s Alumnae Office is featuring an alumna profile each week on alumnae social media and the alumnae website. This week’s featured alumna is Judee Metcalfe von Seldeneck ’60C. Read Judee’s full story along with many others on our website here. Every Monday, we’ll continue to introduce you to a Saint Mary’s alumna with answers to our “Five Fun Questions” and post her full-length spotlight to our website noted above. The featured alumnae represent all ages and a variety of professions and accomplishments, but they have one very important thing in common: they love Saint Mary’s. If you know someone who should be included in the series, let us know by calling 919-424-4118 or emailing annualfund@sms.edu.
