A Message from Chawki L. Karam, Class of 2003

Dear Alumni Community,

It is with great pleasure and honor that I write this letter to you. For those who do not know, I am originally from Lebanon and attended TASIS England in 2001 as an 11th grade boarding student, and graduated in 2003. I have been living in London since then, whereby I completed my bachelor’s degree, then went on to pursue two different master’s degrees, after which I started my career in finance. Hence, in total, I have been living in the UK for almost 18 years – which I still find hard to believe!

The whole ride itself has been wonderful so far. Of course, with no doubt and like many of you, I have personally been through and continue to face many challenges – undoubtedly, losing my father in 2009 has been the most difficult of all. But, with all honesty, the TASIS England experience has been a valuable foundation for facing the realities of life.

This brings me to the key point of writing to you today – "What makes TASIS England so special, and what is it for me to be a TASIS England alumnus?" We may only realize how privileged we are to have attended TASIS England after completing our studies there, taking a step back, and reflecting.

To start with, the School’s strong and diverse academic system is remarkable. On a personal basis, this has opened a door of opportunities for me; I received multiple offers from the top universities in the UK and ended up pursuing three degrees, which has consequently led me to a career in finance. Another key feature of TASIS England is the international community. As an alumnus, I have close friends from TASIS England that are based in the US, Italy, UAE, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Japan, Brazil, etc. – basically, almost in every continent! This is truly special, and something that I am personally always grateful for.

I remain very much devoted to the School, having recently joined its Board of Directors. As an alumnus, I believe this is one form of "giving back" to the School. I will never be able to match how much the School has given me but, by joining the Board, the aim is to maintain and further strengthen the School’s outstanding reputation in its academic programme and the international community.

I hope that you will get to visit the School soon with your family. Depending on how long it has been since you left TASIS, you will be pleasantly impressed with how much the School has developed throughout the years – yet still maintains the "feels like home" sensation.

"TASIS England's Class of 1984 invites you to join us in London to celebrate our 35th (yes, 35 years!!) reunion! I was at TASIS England from 1981-1983 and left when my dad was transferred back to the States. Over the last 30+ years, a sizeable group of us have kept in touch and, in 2014, I put together a 30-year reunion in Denver, Colorado. Now my job has taken me to Belgium where I am working with NATO."
Darcy has also created a Facebook page for this reunion.

One Smart Diet uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) along with infrared (IR) and photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensors to measure and analyze the data with 95% accuracy.
