Colum McCann To Speak at Waynflete:
Fearless Hope Through Radical Empathy

Colum McCann, the widely read and highly acclaimed Irish author of six novels and three collections of stories, is coming to speak at Waynflete on February 6. Not surprisingly, given his stature as a writer, the public event on the 6th is unfortunately already Sold Out. While Waynflete’s interest in hosting such an important writer would seem self-evident, you may be wondering why Mr. McCann is interested in coming to Waynflete, particularly since his public appearances are rare these days. Read about what inspired Mr. McCann to speak at Waynflete.

Fly to Georgia, Walk Home
On the trail with Chloë Rowse ’12

Chloe Rowse '12 is an artist, teacher, athlete, hiker and world traveler. This past spring/summer, she thru-hiked the entire 2,190-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Here is her story:

The previous evening’s storm had washed away much of the brush at the mountaintop. Only after half-sliding down a steep slope to the valley below did Chloë Rowse realize that she had missed a hairpin turn and was no longer on the trail. Shivering, trying her best to overcome feelings of frustration and exhaustion, Chloë hiked back up and, a few minutes later, approached a road crossing where a pickup truck idled in the cold. Here, in the middle of nowhere, were two elderly men distributing cookies and soda to tired hikers. This was one of the many “trail magic” encounters that Chloë experienced during her 2,200-mile hike from Georgia to Maine on the Appalachian Trail.
